DATE – Sunday Dec. 13

TIME – 1 p.m. Eastern

TV – FOX

Pointspread - Carolina-7.5, under/over 47

After the Falcons and Panthers both started the season 5-0, NFL fans were looking forward to their two December meetings that would determine the NFC South Division. And while Carolina kept up its end of the deal, the Falcons have collapsed over the second half of the season, leaving them in the role of trying to spoil Carolina’s perfect season Sunday.

The Falcons-Panthers game from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte starts at 1 p.m. Eastern Sunday as part of a FOX regional broadcast. Carolina is the last undefeated team in the NFL and has clinched the NFC South Division, while Atlanta has fallen to 6-6 and now is scrambling to stay in the Wild Card hunt in the NFC.

After Sunday’s game, Atlanta and Carolina will play again Dec. 27 in Atlanta. The Falcons also have games remaining against Jacksonville and New Orleans.

The Falcons will carry a five-game losing streak into the Atlanta-Carolina game. It’s not difficult to understand why the Falcons have collapsed after their 5-0 start to the season. Atlanta scored at least 24 points in each of its first five games, including games of 39 and 48 points. But in going 1-6 since their fast start, the Falcons have not scored more than 21 points in any game.

Atlanta was 3-0 in games decided by less than a touchdown during the first five games, but it has gone 1-4 in close games since. Carolina will enter the Falcons-Panthers game with a strong record in close games, going 6-0 in games decided by eight or fewer points, including a wild 41-38 win at New Orleans last Sunday. Cam Newton had a season high 331 yards passing in the win against New Orleans.

None of Carolina’s remaining games are against teams above .500, giving Carolina a realistic shot at a perfect season. Only two NFL teams have completed the regular season undefeated since the end of World War II, Miami at 14-0 in 1972 and New England at 16-0 in 2007. Carolina has won 16 straight regular season games over the past two seasons, well shy of the NFL record since World War II when Indianapolis won 23 regular season games in a row over 2008 and 2009.

Atlanta leads the Falcons-Panthers all-time series, 24-16, but Carolina has won four of the past five games. The two teams have split their last 10 games played in Charlotte.
