Before the season, Dallas was expected to be a playoff team while Washington was expected to be one of the NFL's worst teams. But just one quarterback change for each team later, and the upcoming Cowboys-Redskins game has Washington in the playoff chase and Dallas all but out of the running.

The Cowboys and Redskins will renew their rivalry on Monday Night Football on ESPN at 8:30 p.m. Eastern from FedEx Field in Washington.

Dallas opened the season 2-0, but it lost quarterback Tony Romo for seven games because of injury, and Dallas went 0-7. But when Romo returned to start the Cowboys 24-14 win against Miami two weeks ago, Dallas fans were looking forward to a strong finish.

Then Dallas was outclassed and Romo was injured again on Thanksgiving Day in a 33-14 loss to undefeated Carolina. Romo will miss the remainder of the season with his latest injury, leaving the Cowboys in deep trouble in terms of a potential playoff berth, even though Dallas is only two games out of first in the NFC East Division entering the Cowboys-Redskins game.

Washington meanwhile will head into the Cowboys-Redskins MNF game with a lot of momentum, having won two of its last three games, including a 20-14 win against the Giants last Sunday, pushing Washington into a first-place tie with the Giants in the hapless NFC East.

Washington started the preseason with Robert Griffin as its expected quarterback, but Kirk Cousins was named the opening day starter after Griffin was injured. Cousins has ended up starting every game, and the Redskins are 3-1 when he throws for 300-plus yards.

Dallas figures to have a tough task in the Cowboys-Redskins game, as Washington is 5-1 in home games this season, while the Cowboys are just 2-3 on the road.

The Cowboys and Redskins will play a second time Jan. 3 in Dallas.

Dallas leads the all-time Cowboys-Redskins series, 65-43-2. Dallas has won nine of the past 13 games in the series and has won three of the past four Cowboys-Redskins games in Washington.
