After Baylor and TCU shared the Big XII Conference championship last season – but both teams just missed out on a berth in the College Football Playoff – much of the talk in the 2015 college football season centered on their motivation from missing the playoff and whether their season-ending clash in late November could determine one of the four playoff teams.

And for a while, it appeared Baylor and TCU might both reach that game undefeated. But key injuries late in the season have been tough on the Bears and Horned Frogs, leaving both teams probably outside the College Football Playoff discussion once again, at least not without some help.

ESPN will televise Friday Night Football between Baylor and TCU from Fort Worth at 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

The Horned Frogs will enter the Baylor-TCU game having dropped two of their last three games, including a 30-29 setback at Oklahoma last Saturday, when TCU missed a 2-point conversion in the final minute that would've given it the lead. The loss dropped TCU to 9-2, ending its hope of defending its Big XII title and reaching the College Football Playoff.

TCU played without star quarterback Trevone Boykin against Oklahoma, after he was injured the previous week in the Horned Frogs tight 23-17 victory against winless Kansas. Boykin may be ready for the Baylor-TCU game though. Boykin's replacements at quarterback threw three interceptions against Oklahoma.

Baylor knows all about trying to win with a backup quarterback, as its star QB, Seth Russell, was lost to a neck injury in a late October win against Iowa State. The Bears scored at least 56 points in all six games where Russell was healthy. Including the Iowa State game, Baylor has scored 45, 31, 34, and 45 points without a healthy Russell.

Still, the Bears will carry a 9-1 record into the Baylor-TCU game. After losing its first game of the season Nov. 14 at home against Oklahoma, 44-34, Baylor turned the tables on the road last Saturday, giving Oklahoma State its first loss of the season, 45-35. That win kept Baylor in the hunt for a share of the Big XII title and for a berth in the College Football Playoff. After Friday's Baylor-TCU game, the Bears will close the season at home against Texas next Saturday. Friday's game is the regular-season finale for TCU.

The Horned Frogs lead the all-time Baylor-TCU series, 51-48-5, and the two teams have split their last 10 meetings.
